
Alpha Sigma Zeta History

On Easter Sunday morning, 2:30 AM. April 7, 1940, several ladies interested in
forming a chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama, met
Regional Director, Sister Ford of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Maggie Young
Forte, a member of Alpha Rho Zeta Chapter, Montgomery, Alabama, at a local bus
station. This meeting was set to bring Ford and Forte to the city to
provide the official ceremony and initiation for the first group of women that we
know as the Alpha Sigma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

After leaving the bus station, with Sisters Ford and Fort, these ladies went
immediately to Mrs. Crawford's home for the ceremony and stayed until 7:00 AM.
participating in the celebration.

Mrs. Robbie Crawford provided the impetus, energy, and enthusiasm needed to
select participating ladies of this city for this commitment. In this undertaking,
she benefitted from expertise and leadership from outstanding Sigmas of
Montgomery, Alabama as well as information and guidance from the National body.
The chosen ladies accepted the goals and ideas and were thereby given permission
to organize.
